Over the years that the Lacey Sunrise Lions have been in
existence they have been involved in a number of worthy community service projects. They were instrumental in the construction of the Lacey Flag Plaza at the corner
of South Sound Center. They donated the reader board located in front of the
old Lacey fire
station and they constructed the planter and seats outside of the Amtrak bicentennial
station. For over 20 years they organized and sponsored the Lions South Sound Health
Fare (the only health fair in the state totally sponsored by a Lions Club) Over the years
they have provided hundreds of eye exams, eyeglasses, hearing exams and fitting for
hearing aids for deserving individuals. They were instrumental in obtaining the Howard Grimm
Memorial Hearing Test Unit which served this community for many years. The club
has established a small emergency relief fund from which they have been able to assist
victims of natural disasters and individuals who have lost there home due to fire. As funds have
permitted the club has made generous contributions to numerous local, national and
international organizations. |

Dave Whitcher Day of Caring 2009
The Lacey Sunrise Lions Club has found many ways to be of service to our
community. One such method is our participation in the United Way Day of
Caring. Non profit organizations in the community in need of assistance
register projects they need completed with United Way and each year a day is
chosen, usually late September, for individuals and groups to form teams to
complete those projects. Projects are posted and teams choose the project
that best suits their talents and abilities.
Lacey Sunrise Lions Club have been involved in this program for many
years and have dedicated our involvement to a past club member who was our
Day of Caring chairperson and team leader for many years, Lion Dave Whitcher.
Lion Dave passed away a few years ago and we continue our service on this
day in his honor.
Over the years we have spread beauty bark, painted both inside and
outside, landscaped, weeded, installed floor tile and bathroom fixtures,
organized and cleaned recreational and dining areas, planted, built storage
shelves, and many other tasks for numerous organizations in our community.
In 2008 and again this year 2009, our team grew large enough to take on two
entire projects. This year, on September 25th , our projects were
at Kokua and Horsepower.
Located in Lacey, Kokua provides housing and support for individuals with
disabilities so they may lead independent lives. We weeded, trimmed, edged,
pressure washed, and painted areas
around one of their homes, housing 4 ladies. Our final task was to spread
beauty bark in areas that we had just cleaned. The difference in appearance
was extraordinary and greatly appreciated by both the residents and Kokua
staff who provided us with lunch and snacks during the 6 hours that nine
Lacey Sunrise Lion members each spent working.
Located on Littlerock Road, Horsepower provides therapeutic horseback
riding for individuals with disabilities. Previously Lacey Sunrise Lions
Club were involved in building a wheel chair ramp for them to allow
individuals with disabilities easy access to mount the horses (see Wheel
Chair Ramp Projects) for riding session. Although it has been moved, the
ramp is still functioning very well and holding up nicely. This year on the
Day
of Caring we worked building three loafing sheds for the horses to stand
under during inclement weather. Along with another group much of this was
finished and plans were made to complete the project in the near future with
the help of our Wheel Chair Ramp crew. Horsepower also provided lunch and
snacks during the 7 hours five Lacey Sunrise Lion member each spent working
there.
Lacey Sunrise Lions contributed a total of 88 individual hours on the
2009 Day of Caring and our continued participation is yet another example
for our club giving of our services to the community and helping build a
better life for all of us. |

Adopt-A-Road
Project Chairperson:
Randy Harris
|
Several years ago, the City of Lacey began the Adopt A Road Program.
Individuals or groups signed an agreement with the city to keep a street
clean of litter on a voluntary basis. The city provided the litter bags,
equipment, vest, and
protective headwear for the individuals and volunteers would be covered
under the city’s worker protection insurance program. The city also
published a list of streets that were adopted and posted signs on the
adopted streets with the Adopt A Road sign and the name of the group or
individual volunteering to maintain that street.

Lacey Sunrise Lions Club have adopted Carpenter Road from
Pacific Avenue south to Roolan Nursing Home, a half mile stretch of city
street and at least once a month form a crew to pick up the litter on that
stretch of roadway. The bags are left and the city picks them up at their
convenience. Our name is posted on each end of the area we have chosen to
maintain.
The next time you travel this roadway, look to see our
sign and if there is litter, please let us know! We are looking for ways to
partner with the city and our community to help each other. We Serve.

The three Lacey Lions clubs,
Lacey Lamplighters, Lacey Mid Day and Lacey Sunrise Lions, joined together
to distribute1,104 dictionaries to 3rd grade students in the
North Thurston Public School District. Each club was responsible for
presenting dictionaries to 13 elementary schools in the district. This was
our fifth year of working together on this project.
Giving a dictionary to 3rd grade students
helps them to learn the meaning of words. Some words may sound the same but
spelled differently, this can be confusing to students. Educators state that
students are "learning to read" when they enter 3rd grade,
by time they enter 4th grade, they are "reading to learn".
Response from principals, teachers and staff is
positive and thankful for this donation. Teachers blend these dictionaries
into their curriculum and by time students leave 3rd grade they
are familiar with them. Student reaction to receiving a dictionary range
from thoughtful to out right joy and the fact this is their own dictionary
is meaningful to them. Tim Fries, Principal of Horizon Elementary School
stated and I quote "Donations like yours allow schools to provide much
broader services for children. Your generous donation is a tremendous
contribution to the education of our students. Together we are able to make
a difference in the lives and education of children", end quote.
With co-operation from principals and teachers, we
schedule a time to visit class rooms to make a short presentation, "we are
Lions and we volunteer our time" to going over 3 or 4 sections of the
dictionaries to familiarize students with some of the content. All of this
takes 10 to 15 minutes for each class.

Several years ago the Lacey Lamplighter Lions had a
project of re-furbishing wheelchairs and giving them to low income and needy
individuals. Members of the Lacey Sunrise Lions became aware that often,
when a person was confined to a wheelchair, they became house bound.
This
started an ongoing project of building wheelchair ramps to help those
individuals confined to wheelchairs.
Local Hospitals, Home Care nurses and Therapy Organizations have become
aware of our service project of building wheelchair ramps. When they are
doing therapy or home care and find an individual that is house bound
because they are confined to a wheelchair, they call the Lacey Sunrise Lions
Club. 5 years ago we constructed three wheelchair ramps. Last year we
constructed 15 ramps and we have constructed 10 ramps this year.
These ramps can range from an 8 foot ramp, to eliminate one step, to a ramp
of 30, 40 and up to 50 feet long to give access out of homes. Our
ramps are constructed with a slope of no greater that one inch drop to one
foot in length. Railings are constructed for safety and the ramps are
covered with indoor-outdoor carpeting to give satisfactory traction.
These ramps are constructed to County and City building codes. The costs of
these ramps is about $15.00 per linear foot. The Lacey Sunrise Lions has a
limited budget to help those that can not help themselves. Most of the
projects are supplemented by donations from the home owners for the purchase
of materials.
The Lacey Sunrise Lions building crew have worked with Lions in Yelm,
Tumwater and Rochester in the construction of ramps.
The Lacey Sunrise Lions have from 8 to 10 Lions that volunteer their time,
energy and tools to work on these ramps.
This is a most worthwhile project and the appreciation of the individuals
that have been house bound is a great reward for our efforts. |

Each year the Lacey Sunrise Lions participate in the Lions
International Peace Poster Contest. We sponsor the contest in four or five
of our North Thurston Public Schools as well as one private school. The
materials are delivered to the participating schools about the third week of
September and the completed posters are picked up by committee members by
Oct.31st.
The winning posters from each school are then delivered to the District
Governor for judging at the District level. After the holidays, committee
members go back to each school to award a $50.00 Gift Certificate to the winner
of that school. Sometimes, when there is more than one deserving poster, we
award a $15.00 Gift Certificate.
This contest gives students an opportunity to express themselves
artistically and emotionally about a theme on Peace that is chosen by Lions
International. We have had excellent cooperation from the schools in which
we sponsor the event. Our thanks to the participating schools and our
congratulations to the winning students.

Camp Leo for Children with Diabetes
Camp Leo for Children With Diabetes
has been serving children with diabetes since 1989.
Camp Leo is a resident (overnight)
camping experience for children who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes entering
grades 3rd-5th for Jr. Camp and also entering grades 6th-8th for Senior
Camp. .
Camp Leo is held each summer at Panhandle Lake 4H Campgrounds located near
Shelton, WA.
Camp Leo’s dedicated staff of doctors, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists,
counselors and other volunteers speaks well for the continued growth and
qualifications of the Camp Leo program.
Lion club members play an important roll in Camp Leo. Donations from
Lions to our scholarship fund make it possible that "no child is
turned away because they can not afford our camp fees".
Lions volunteer their time assisting with crafts, archery, fishing and
other activities where needed. Lions volunteer in the dinning hall before
and after meals.
